Most travelers know Peru for one unforgettable icon, but as Laly was reminded on her recent trip, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. From Lima to Cusco, the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu, journeys to Peru are full of beauty, adventure, and those little moments that bring a destination to life. Yes, Machu Picchu is extraordinary, but Peru has so much more to show you if you just know where to look.
On a recent trip, Laly explored some of the classic highlights as well as a more playful, active side of Peru that we can easily weave into our custom itineraries. Picture epic mountain views, serene waterside afternoons, and thrilling ATV trails—and a few very opinionated llamas along the way.
Above the Clouds, Beneath the Stone
Some of Laly’s favorite moments in Peru happened on foot. Whether hiking near Huayna Picchu, exploring the Sacred Valley, or setting out toward Devil’s Balcony, every trail seemed to lead to another breathtaking view or natural wonder.
Making New Friends
Spending several hours on a trek with llamas is every bit as fun as it sounds. Laly reports that they were, indeed, adorable, full of personality, and impossible not to photograph. It felt joyful, a little unexpected, and completely memorable. This is one of those experiences that works beautifully for families, but can be just as charming for couples or anyone who wants a more living connection to the landscape.
A Little Adrenaline, A Lot of Beauty
Seeking thrills and more remote scenery, Laly hopped on an ATV and cruised out to Moray. It was a gorgeous sunny day, the views were incredible, and the whole experience added a dash of excitement to the Sacred Valley. It was energizing and immersive without being overly intense.
Stillness, With a View
Kayaking on Huaypo Lagoon was one of the most peaceful experiences of the trip. Surrounded by mountains and open sky, the whole setting felt unreal. It was quiet and scenic; deeply calming in that way only a place of natural beauty can be.
Beauty Between Landmarks
Ollantaytambo and the Sacred Valley as a whole remind us that some of Peru’s best moments happen in between the major headline sites. The scenery here is extraordinary, with layers of mountains, the texture of history, and a kind of grandeur that stops you mid-sentence. This is a region that deserves time, not just a pass-through on the way to Machu Picchu.
Peru at Different Pace
Horseback riding offered yet another perspective on the landscape, and it was such a special way to experience the Sacred Valley. There is something about seeing these wide-open, dramatic surroundings atop a four-legged friend that makes everything feel a little more cinematic; a wonderful option for travelers looking for a gentle adventure and a fresh way to connect with the region.
