Paraty
Just a 4-hour drive from São Paulo or Rio – or a quick 45-minute helicopter ride – you’ll find the quaint yet stunning historic town of Paraty. Nestled in Brazil’s lush Green Coast, Paraty sits right where the mountains meet the Atlantic coast. It’s a serene base for boat trips to secluded beaches, waterfall hikes, and mangrove kayaking. Healthy pours of cachaça and fresh seafood at local spots awaits. Joe split his stay between our 2 favorite boutique gems, Pousada Literária & Casa Turquesa, and can help you pick your perfect stay here. Paraty is an ideal destination for all travelers. Whether you’re seeking stunning hikes to nearby waterfalls, kayaking, or swimming in pristine waters, Paraty is pure perfection!
Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is, of course, a must-see when in Brazil, but it is so much more than Carnaval and stunning beaches. Iconic monuments like the Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf Mountain are must-sees, but as with all Exeter itineraries, our regional experts will ensure you discover the hidden gems. Explore the bohemian charm of Santa Teresa’s hills, delve into contemporary art at the Rio Art Museum, or get a sneak peek into Carnaval’s magic at a samba school’s workshop. Joe recommends experiencing Rio’s natural beauty in the world’s largest urban park, offering numerous hiking trails perfect for those seeking a break from the beach. Take a bike tour to visit the 19th-century Botanical Gardens and explore neighborhoods not typically visited by tourists. According to Joe, Rio’s food scene is nothing short of epic, featuring world-class Michelin-star restaurants alongside iconic neighborhood spots where you can enjoy traditional snacks and sip ice-cold draft beer, also known as “chopp.”
Ibiti Project
Accessible yet secluded, Ibiti Project is another one of Brazil’s crown jewels just a scenic drive from Rio or a short flight from São Paulo. Ibiti is a perfect blend of luxury, conservation, art, and wellness. Their holistic approach to hospitality aims to cultivate happiness, with a strong commitment to honoring nature and local communities. During his stay at the rustic yet refined Engenho Lodge, Joe enjoyed delicious traditional cuisine and spectacular countryside views. With endless activities like hiking, biking, and horseback riding, it’s no wonder Joe recommends this often-overlooked destination so highly.
Pantanal
A safari adventure in South America? Yep! That’s right. Head to the vast 204-square mile private reserve to revel in the beauty of Brazil’s most captivating ecosystem. This reserve dazzles with its stunning biodiversity, hosting jaguars, capybaras, and a myriad of bird species. While experiencing the majesty of these rare species, unwind in luxury during your stay at the Caiman Lodge. This luxurious retreat is located right in the heart of the Pantanal. Their main lodge, Casa Caiman, offers 18 elegant suites surrounded by lush gardens, a swimming pool, and a gym.
“I fell in love with Brazil learning Portuguese and living there in college, and it’s truly shaped my life and career unlike anywhere else. So much of Brazil’s diversity, size and global impact is reminiscent of the US, yet at the same time completely different and fascinating – and it’s this push & pull that’s kept me coming back and made me want everyone I know to visit. Whether it’s music, food, art, nature, or adventure, you’ll find what you’re looking for – and more than most would ever imagine.”
